Retinol, also called vitamin A1, is a fat-soluble vitamin in the vitamin A family that is found in food and used as a dietary supplement. Retinol or other forms of vitamin A are needed for vision, cellular development, maintenance of skin and mucous membranes, immune function and reproductive development. Dietary sources include fish, dairy products, and meat. As a supplement it is used to treat and prevent vitamin A deficiency, especially that which results in xerophthalmia. It is taken by mouth or by injection into a muscle. As an ingredient in skin-care products, it is used to reduce wrinkles and other effects of skin aging.

Retinol at normal doses is well tolerated. High doses may cause enlargement of the liver, dry skin, and hypervitaminosis A. High doses during pregnancy may harm the fetus. The body converts retinol to retinal and retinoic acid, through which it acts.

Retinol was discovered in 1909, isolated in 1931, and first made in 1947. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Retinol is available as a generic medication and over the counter. In 2021, vitamin A was the 298th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 500,000 prescriptions.

Vitamins are organic molecules (or a set of closely related molecules called vitamers) that are essential to an organism in small quantities for proper metabolic function. Essential nutrients cannot be synthesized in the organism in sufficient quantities for survival, and therefore must be obtained through the diet. For example, vitamin C can be synthesized by some species but not by others; it is not considered a vitamin in the first instance but is in the second. Most vitamins are not single molecules, but groups of related molecules called vitamers. For example, there are eight vitamers of vitamin E: four tocopherols and four tocotrienols.

The term vitamin does not include the three other groups of essential nutrients: minerals, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids.

Major health organizations list thirteen vitamins:

  • Vitamin A (all-trans-retinols, all-trans-retinyl-esters, as well as all-trans-beta-carotene and other provitamin A carotenoids)
  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine)
  • Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin)
  • Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)
  • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)
  • Vitamin B7 (biotin)
  • Vitamin B9 (folic acid and folates)
  • Vitamin B12 (cobalamins)
  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid and ascorbates)
  • Vitamin D (calciferols)
  • Vitamin E (tocopherols and tocotrienols)
  • Vitamin K (phylloquinones, menaquinones, and menadiones)

Some sources include a fourteenth, choline.

Vitamins have diverse biochemical functions. Vitamin A acts as a regulator of cell and tissue growth and differentiation. Vitamin D provides a hormone-like function, regulating mineral metabolism for bones and other organs. The B complex vitamins function as enzyme cofactors (coenzymes) or the precursors for them. Vitamins C and E function as antioxidants. Both deficient and excess intake of a vitamin can potentially cause clinically significant illness, although excess intake of water-soluble vitamins is less likely to do so.

All the vitamins were discovered between 1913 and 1948. Historically, when intake of vitamins from diet was lacking, the results were vitamin deficiency diseases. Then, starting in 1935, commercially produced tablets of yeast-extract vitamin B complex and semi-synthetic vitamin C became available. This was followed in the 1950s by the mass production and marketing of vitamin supplements, including multivitamins, to prevent vitamin deficiencies in the general population. Governments have mandated the addition of some vitamins to staple foods such as flour or milk, referred to as food fortification, to prevent deficiencies. Recommendations for folic acid supplementation during pregnancy reduced risk of infant neural tube defects.

I’ve been using select Strivectin products for years, mainly with my evening routine. I wanted to add something during the daytime and saw this serum had recently came to Ulta. I decided to try it and have noticed quite a difference in such a sort time. I am entering mid30s and using as more of a preventative measure to curb the aging process. I have VERY temperamental skin. Using this during the day and the other products during the evening have really helped balance out my skin. I know others have mentioned breakouts while using the product, but the skin needs to go through an adjustment period. Because I use a nighttime retinol, this did not affect my skin negatively. I use in the morning and then apply moisturizer after the serum has dried down. It can be a little tacky. I’ve noticed smoothness and softness.

I have all this skin problems in one face. Malasma, fine lines, large pores, adult acne, combo skin with oil and dry patches at 40yrs. I have tried everything including products that cost double this. In just over a week my pores are less noticeable. Using morning and night. Skin is holding moisture better. Overall tone is better. Skin is firmer. With less irritation than other C serums that I have been using. Can’t wait to see how it looks with longer use. This is my first StriVectin product but I will definitely be trying more after this amazing introduction to the brand. I am an aesthetician, makeup artist and cosmetologist.

Do you like Soarin Over The World at Epcot and Disney California Adventure?! Well this is the serum for you! It smells exactly like the scent they spray for when you fly over the Taj Mahal. EXACTLY. It doesn’t bother me much, but for people with sensitive noses it may be overwhelming. I like how it goes on, but it’s still too soon to tell how it effects my fine lines.

I was excited to try this out because I like serums at night time. The scent is lightly citrus, but the texture feels kind if sticky. I’m not wowed by that. The results look like there is some improvement. I would consider it but I don’t know if I would purchase again.

Just know it’s literally the best thing I’ve ever put on my face. It’s doing literally everything, it smells absolutely amazing. It works well on acne prone and sensitive skin. And my skin looks literally perfect after a week. I’m talking about acne, fine lines, surface dryness, and dullness. All of it just fixed!
