A cooler, portable ice chest, ice box, cool box, chilly bin (in New Zealand), or esky (Australia) is an insulated box used to keep food or drink cool.
Ice cubes are most commonly placed in it to help the contents inside stay cool. Ice packs are sometimes used, as they either contain the melting water inside or have a gel sealed inside that stays cold longer than plain ice (absorbing heat as it changes phase).
Coolers are often taken on picnics and on vacation or holidays. When summers are hot, they may also be used just to get cold groceries home from the store, such as keeping ice cream from melting in a sizzling automobile. Even without adding ice, this can be helpful, particularly if the trip home will be lengthy. Some coolers have built-in cupholders in the lid.
They are usually made with interior and exterior shells of plastic, with a hard foam in between. They come in sizes from small personal ones to large family ones with wheels. Disposable ones are made solely from polystyrene foam (such as a disposable coffee cup) about 2 cm or one inch thick. Most reusable ones have molded-in handles; a few have shoulder straps. The cooler has developed from just a means of keeping beverages cold into a mode of transportation with the ride-on cooler. A thermal bag, cooler bag, or cool bag is very similar in concept, but typically smaller and not rigid.
In physical geography, tundra () is a type of biome where tree growth is hindered by frigid temperatures and short growing seasons. There are three regions and associated types of tundra: Arctic tundra, alpine tundra, and Antarctic tundra.
Tundra vegetation is composed of dwarf shrubs, sedges, grasses, mosses, and lichens. Scattered trees grow in some tundra regions. The ecotone (or ecological boundary region) between the tundra and the forest is known as the tree line or timberline. The tundra soil is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus. The soil also contains large amounts of biomass and decomposed biomass that has been stored as methane and carbon dioxide in the permafrost, making the tundra soil a carbon sink. As global warming heats the ecosystem and causes soil thawing, the permafrost carbon cycle accelerates and releases much of these soil-contained greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, creating a feedback cycle that changes climate.

I own numerous Yeti products, but this is my first hard cooler. I purchased this model in the blue color at the Chicago Yeti store. It was extremely helpful to be able to compare different cooler sizes in person, and the sales crew there was very knowledgeable. I like this size as it fits perfectly in multiple configurations behind the 3rd row in my SUV and allows for additional luggage. It is also the maximum weight (when filled) that I’m comfortable routinely lifting – though it is heavy when it’s full. The handle and wheels are a great addition to this cooler! The wheels roll smoothly. The lid and latches are standard Yeti – great build and quality.
For a fun experiment, I purchased 2 bags of “sacrificial ice” and put them in the cooler I week prior to a trip. The cooler was in my kitchen with a constant 72deg external temperature. I started the stopwatch on my wrist to see what would happen. Nothing terribly scientific, but each day I checked the ice a few times. 1-week in, I still had about 1/3 of my ice remaining. So, I emptied the water, put some Yeti-Ice in the bottom, kept the remaining 1/3 of my “sacrificial ice” instead of putting in new ice, and packed the cooler with food and beverages for my weekend trip. None of the items I put in the cooler for my trip were pre-chilled. The cooler got good use on the trip – the kids could easily open the cooler during our drive and used it like a car refrigerator during the 3-day weekend trip.
When I got home, I emptied the remaining food and beverage cans, but there was still ice remaining. I decided to wait to see how long it would last. It turns out, 1 day shy of 2 weeks! Not only was there ice during this entire time, but the internal temperature of the cooler remained at or below safe refrigerator temperatures. This is far more of a buffer of temperature stability and food safety than I had anticipated and is amazing with respect to ice preservation. While this was not a scientific experiment, it was a practical one for me. Like some, I had read about the legendary Yeti ice retention with these products. But this cooler far exceeded my expectations!

there is a nice aftermarket basket made for this the yeti tundra haul. look for the above sea level cooler basket.

I love the cooler but I would love it more if it had a divider and basket!
by Corey
I you plan to use a divider or a basket for the Haul, then do not buy this cooler.

We use the Haul all summer and winter. Keep it outside at the cabin when it’s 10 degrees to keep the beverages from freezing.
