Universal Pro-Retinol – Glossier | Skincare & Beauty Products Inspired by Real Life
A nightly retinoid made for just about everyone, that does just about everything: improves the appearance of fine lines, blemishes, pores, dark spots, and uneven tone and texture, all while nourishing skin.
A retinoid everyone can love.
WHY IT’S SPECIAL:
-
It’s formulated with 0.5% pro-retinol in the form of Retinyl Sunflowerate—an innovative hybrid of pure retinol and sunflower seed fatty acids that gives you the benefits of a retinoid with fewer of the usual downsides (irritation, dryness, peeling, etc…)
-
Stevia Leaf Extract supports the pro-retinol in helping to smooth the look of skin, specifically working on the fine lines. It’s one of many plant-based retinol alternatives you can find in nature
-
Whether you’re new to retinoids, or a seasoned pro, we designed this one for you. You get hardworking ingredients (and serious results!), balanced with a creamy texture and nourishing, plant-based humectants (like Glycerin and Mondo Grass Root Extract) that make the formula easier for all skin types to handle
-
In our clinical studies, Universal Pro-Retinol was universally loved. After 4 weeks of use: 100% of testers said their skin looks and feels renewed, smoother, softer, more radiant, and visibly transformed
Additional information
Ingredients | 0.5% Retinyl Sunflowerate: A retinol derivative composed of retinol and sunflower seed fatty acids. It’s a new innovation in the world of retinoids, found to be less irritating than its predecessors, yet just as efficacious—it’s shown to improve the appearance of fine lines, dark spots, texture, and blemishes. We put 0.5% in our formula (enough to get the benefits, while still being tolerable for all skin types) Stevia Extract: Sourced from the stems and leaves of the Stevia plant, it helps smooth the overall appearance of your skin, specifically working on the fine lines. Think of it as retinol’s naturally-derived supporting actor Mondo Grass Root Extract: A plant-derived extract from the Ophiopogon Japonicus Root, it acts as a humectant to help your skin hold onto moisture. This keeps your skin conditioned, and helps minimize unwanted irritation that often comes along with using a retinoid |

Beauty is commonly described as a feature of objects that makes them pleasurable to perceive. Such objects include landscapes, sunsets, humans and works of art. Beauty, art and taste are the main subjects of aesthetics, one of the fields of study within philosophy. As a positive aesthetic value, it is contrasted with ugliness as its negative counterpart.
One difficulty in understanding beauty is that it has both objective and subjective aspects: it is seen as a property of things but also as depending on the emotional response of observers. Because of its subjective side, beauty is said to be "in the eye of the beholder". It has been argued that the ability on the side of the subject needed to perceive and judge beauty, sometimes referred to as the "sense of taste", can be trained and that the verdicts of experts coincide in the long run. This suggests the standards of validity of judgments of beauty are intersubjective, i.e. dependent on a group of judges, rather than fully subjective or objective.
Conceptions of beauty aim to capture what is essential to all beautiful things. Classical conceptions define beauty in terms of the relation between the beautiful object as a whole and its parts: the parts should stand in the right proportion to each other and thus compose an integrated harmonious whole. Hedonist conceptions see a necessary connection between pleasure and beauty, e.g. that for an object to be beautiful is for it to cause disinterested pleasure. Other conceptions include defining beautiful objects in terms of their value, of a loving attitude toward them or of their function.

Life is a quality that distinguishes matter that has biological processes, such as signaling and self-sustaining processes, from matter that does not. It is defined descriptively by the capacity for homeostasis, organisation, metabolism, growth, adaptation, response to stimuli, and reproduction. All life over time eventually reaches a state of death, and none is immortal. Many philosophical definitions of living systems have been proposed, such as self-organizing systems. Viruses in particular make definition difficult as they replicate only in host cells. Life exists all over the Earth in air, water, and soil, with many ecosystems forming the biosphere. Some of these are harsh environments occupied only by extremophiles.
Life has been studied since ancient times, with theories such as Empedocles's materialism asserting that it was composed of four eternal elements, and Aristotle's hylomorphism asserting that living things have souls and embody both form and matter. Life originated at least 3.5 billion years ago, resulting in a universal common ancestor. This evolved into all the species that exist now, by way of many extinct species, some of which have left traces as fossils. Attempts to classify living things, too, began with Aristotle. Modern classification began with Carl Linnaeus's system of binomial nomenclature in the 1740s.
Living things are composed of biochemical molecules, formed mainly from a few core chemical elements. All living things contain two types of large molecule, proteins and nucleic acids, the latter usually both DNA and RNA: these carry the information needed by each species, including the instructions to make each type of protein. The proteins, in turn, serve as the machinery which carries out the many chemical processes of life. The cell is the structural and functional unit of life. Smaller organisms, including prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea), consist of small single cells. Larger organisms, mainly eukaryotes, can consist of single cells or may be multicellular with more complex structure. Life is only known to exist on Earth but extraterrestrial life is thought probable. Artificial life is being simulated and explored by scientists and engineers.

Retinol, also called vitamin A1, is a fat-soluble vitamin in the vitamin A family that is found in food and used as a dietary supplement. Retinol or other forms of vitamin A are needed for vision, cellular development, maintenance of skin and mucous membranes, immune function and reproductive development. Dietary sources include fish, dairy products, and meat. As a supplement it is used to treat and prevent vitamin A deficiency, especially that which results in xerophthalmia. It is taken by mouth or by injection into a muscle. As an ingredient in skin-care products, it is used to reduce wrinkles and other effects of skin aging.
Retinol at normal doses is well tolerated. High doses may cause enlargement of the liver, dry skin, and hypervitaminosis A. High doses during pregnancy may harm the fetus. The body converts retinol to retinal and retinoic acid, through which it acts.
Retinol was discovered in 1909, isolated in 1931, and first made in 1947. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Retinol is available as a generic medication and over the counter. In 2021, vitamin A was the 298th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 500,000 prescriptions.
Universal is the adjective for universe.

I have sensitive skin, but I am beginning to see signs of aging and still struggle with breakouts so I have been wanting to incorporate retinol into my routine. The format of this product makes it easy to use and grants me the benefit of retinol without any of the negative side effects (dryness, redness, etc) Im excited to continue using it!

Haven’t used it long enough to see results yet, but the texture is super nice and not drying. Also the pump kept screwing off in the beginning but it’s all good now! Can’t wait to keep using this!

I was so scared to try using a retinol because I have already dry skin, but this retinol feels so great going on and almost makes my skin feel more moisturized somehow?! I still only started using it once a week and have moved to twice a week but haven’t had any irritation and it’s been making my skin ✨glow✨

I’ve used prescription Tretinoin .05 for years. It works, but it’s nice to alternate with something gentle. The strangest thing…I wear I’ve seen more fading of discoloration with this than I’ve ever had with prescription, and I’ve been using this for only 3 months! It’s shocking! Truly great product.
