Nelson Platform Bench, Wood Base
Solid wood construction with an airy slatted top. Authentic modern bench designed by George Nelson. Serves equally well as bench or table.
For Herman Miller’s influential design director George Nelson, utility was as important as beauty. Originally designed for his own office, where Nelson hoped the slatted top would discourage visitors from sitting too long, the Platform Bench (1946) is both timeless and functional. Available with finger-jointed wood base or slender chromed metal legs for superior strength. This is the authentic Nelson Bench produced by Herman Miller.

I have the natural maple 60″ bench with the metal base, and use it as a coffee table in my small living room. I find myself just staring at this piece, it’s incredible.

Another George Nelson classic design; simple, clean and strong. Elegant construction techniques visually reinforce the evident highest quality furniture construction. Mine is currently in a window niche of the master bedroom where it serves as table, bench and occasional display surface. It has the continuing potential to be functional in numerous other spaces.

I replaced a big and heavy Noguchi Coffee Table with a Nelson bench and could not be happier. While it’s meant to be a bench that you sit on, It looks great as a coffee or accent table, and is much easier to move should I want to temporarily pull out the sofabed or just reconfigure my living room for entertaining. This is an elegant, classic and timeless piece that has never and will not likely ever go out of style. I will always have at least one of these originals in an appropriate length (not the more recent updated design) in any future homes.

The bench arrived as described. I sat in it before at a HM dealer and found it to be a great addition to the home. What I love about this bench is the height of the seat is about as perfect. But when looks closely, the wood is joined together with such detail and the wood slates are beyond smooth, so the design also makes a great coffee table because the lines are flawless. It is very stable and strong so there is nothing flimsy about it. We are using it as a bench once you enter our studio loft. The bench isn’t super comfortable without the bench cushion, but then again, we use it as a seat when we put on our shoes and articles of clothing once we enter or leave our house from the stairway.
