A cleaner, cleanser, cleaner or cleaning operative is a type of industrial or domestic worker who is tasked with cleaning a space. A janitor (US and Canada), also known as a custodian, porter or caretaker, is a person who cleans and might also carry out maintenance and security duties. A similar position, but usually with more managerial duties and not including cleaning, is occupied by building superintendents in the United States and Canada and by site managers in schools in the United Kingdom.

According to the Cambridge English dictionary a "cleaner" is "a person whose job is to clean houses, offices, public places, etc.:"; the Collins dictionary states that: "A cleaner is someone who is employed to clean the rooms and furniture inside a building.". However, a cleaner does not always have to be employed and perform work for pay, such as in the case of volunteer work or community service. "Cleaner" may also refer to cleaning agents e.g. oven cleaner, or devices used for cleaning, eg. vacuum cleaner.

Cleaning operatives may specialize in cleaning particular things or places, such as window cleaners, housekeepers, janitors, crime scene cleaners and so on. Cleaning operatives often work when the people who otherwise occupy the space are not around. They may clean offices at night or houses during the workday.

Dyson may refer to:

  • Dyson (surname), people with the surname Dyson
  • Dyson (company), a Singaporean multinational home appliances company founded by James Dyson
  • Dyson (crater), a crater on the Moon
  • Dyson (operating system), a Unix general-purpose operating system derived from Debian using the illumos kernel, libc, and SMF init system
  • Dyson sphere, a hypothetical megastructure that completely encompasses a star and captures most or all of its power output
  • Dyson tree, a hypothetical plant suggested by physicist Freeman Dyson
    • Eufloria (formerly called Dyson), a video game based on the idea of Dyson trees
  • USS Dyson (DD-572), a United States Navy destroyer in commission from 1942 to 1947
  • NOAAS Oscar Dyson (R 224), an American fisheries and oceanographic research ship in commission in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration since 2005
  • Dysons, an Australian bus operator
  • Dyson, a character in the Canadian television series Lost Girl
  • The Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, often referred to as "Dyson"

A vacuum (pl.: vacuums or vacua) is space devoid of matter. The word is derived from the Latin adjective vacuus (neuter vacuum) meaning "vacant" or "void". An approximation to such vacuum is a region with a gaseous pressure much less than atmospheric pressure. Physicists often discuss ideal test results that would occur in a perfect vacuum, which they sometimes simply call "vacuum" or free space, and use the term partial vacuum to refer to an actual imperfect vacuum as one might have in a laboratory or in space. In engineering and applied physics on the other hand, vacuum refers to any space in which the pressure is considerably lower than atmospheric pressure. The Latin term in vacuo is used to describe an object that is surrounded by a vacuum.

The quality of a partial vacuum refers to how closely it approaches a perfect vacuum. Other things equal, lower gas pressure means higher-quality vacuum. For example, a typical vacuum cleaner produces enough suction to reduce air pressure by around 20%. But higher-quality vacuums are possible. Ultra-high vacuum chambers, common in chemistry, physics, and engineering, operate below one trillionth (10−12) of atmospheric pressure (100 nPa), and can reach around 100 particles/cm3. Outer space is an even higher-quality vacuum, with the equivalent of just a few hydrogen atoms per cubic meter on average in intergalactic space.

Vacuum has been a frequent topic of philosophical debate since ancient Greek times, but was not studied empirically until the 17th century. Clemens Timpler (1605) philosophized about the experimental possibility of producing a vacuum in small tubes. Evangelista Torricelli produced the first laboratory vacuum in 1643, and other experimental techniques were developed as a result of his theories of atmospheric pressure. A Torricellian vacuum is created by filling with mercury a tall glass container closed at one end, and then inverting it in a bowl to contain the mercury (see below).

Vacuum became a valuable industrial tool in the 20th century with the introduction of incandescent light bulbs and vacuum tubes, and a wide array of vacuum technologies has since become available. The development of human spaceflight has raised interest in the impact of vacuum on human health, and on life forms in general.

I upgraded from the V6. I only did so as I couldn’t pass by such a great deal in the Boxing Day sales. I love my V6 too and have gifted it to my friend as I know she will love it just as much! This one feels so much smoother than the V6. The run time is a good 10 minutes longer and just as easy to handle as the V6. I rarely get my big old Shark vacuum out anymore as this does just as good of a job without the hassle of heavy weight and a long extension cord. Well done Dyson!

I have wanted a stick vacuum for a few years now after purchasing the Dyson barrel.. I finally spoilt myself and purchased one last week and I love it! I may never haul my big Dyson out ever again, the suction is just as strong and I can whip around my 5 bedroom house in 10 mins flat.. best purchase of 2018.

I switched over from a Hoover Regal Elegance plug in vacuum, having two messy kids it because quite the chore pulling out the vacuum for use. Setting it up and changing power points 3 times, the V7 allows me to do everything much faster and more conveniently. I can pull it off the wall and clean a mess within 5 seconds now where previously it would have been a multi minute process. Makes cleaning enjoyable, if that’s even possible? Thank you Dyson!

While visiting my sister, she was using her Dyson and telling me how she loves it, so I tried using it and was amazed at how light it was and easy to use. We have a perfectly good vacuum but needing to be cleaned just about every day and needing to remove and clean the filter was a chore , especially having to use a toothbrush to clean the filter. My husband thought he would surprise me and bought the animal model (we only have a pet budgie!!) but when I took it out the box, was disappointed as it was too heavy for me as I have bursitis in my right shoulder and often need steroid injections. The store where he purchased it gladly refunded the money and we then ordered the V7 and unbelievable…much lighter, so easy to use and still cant believe the ease of cleaning it . We now take turn about as it was a joint Christmas present !!

I’m extremely happy with the versatility and power of this device, both as a stick floor cleaner and a hand held for sills, furniture etc. Easy to use and very well designed.
I knocked off a star because the battery life is short. In truth for me this is no big deal – I’ve simply changed my cleaning routine from doing everything at once to a more ‘little and often’ approach, as I find that I need ‘max’ power for just about all my cleaning.
    Highly recommended

This is my 4th Dyson stick over the last 10 years. All 4 are still in good working order with only 1 so far having a battery replaced. Extremely disappointed that this machine doesn’t have a crevice tool unlike my other 3. V6 animal x2 DC44 x1
    Why not Dyson?
You supply the holder but no tool.
    Extremely disappointed.

I had one of the original Dyson stick vacuums which I loved from the moment I brought it. I have to mention though that when I got it, it did seem like pretty good technology. Now that I compare it to my new one (V7 Orignal – so not even the most technological one) … well I know had been slumbering with older technology… 😉
I was always a person who never really minded vacuuming, but honestly, after using my NEW stock vac, I will,e able to use this device only as my vacuum device. I will not have to drag out my full size vac to do the house because this one just does a fantastic job at it! Thanks Dyson!

I am absolutely thrilled with the quality, power, & build.
I have checked the reviews on all website before spending on V7 but I think reviews don’t really give you a real picture. My review towards v7 is perfect. I have cleaned around 4 carpeted rooms, 2 lounge areas with tiles on & 1 living with timber floors only with turbine head with one single charge. I was still having the battery to maybe run for few minutes.
No doubt V8, V10 & V11 might be more powerful & has capability to replace your old vacuum but with my experience V7 is great as well.
