Apoquel is an oral tablet that works differently than other allergy medications. It starts to relieve those unpleasant symptoms within 4 hours, and effectively controls itching within 24. Apoquel is ideal for both short or long-term treatment and can help to offer relief without many of the side effects associated with steroids.
Uses
Apoquel is indicated for the relief of itching and inflammation caused by allergic skin disease (atopy, atopic dermatitis) in dogs 12 months of age or older.
Possible Side Effects
The most common side effects were vomiting and diarrhea and similar to those seen with placebo (sugar pills). These side effects occurred in only a small percentage of dogs treated with Apoquel and typically stopped on their own.
Drug & Food Interactions
Apoquel has not been tested in dogs receiving medications commonly used to treat skin conditions such as glucocorticoids, cyclosporines, and other systemic immunosuppressive agents.
Precautions
Do not use Apoquel in dogs less than 12 months of age or those with serious infections. APOQUEL may increase the chances of developing serious infections and may cause existing parasitic skin infestations or pre-existing cancers to get worse. APOQUEL has not been tested in dogs receiving some medications including some commonly used to treat skin conditions such as corticosteroids and cyclosporyne. Apoquel is not for use in breeding dogs or pregnant or lactating females. Dogs taking Apoquel should be monitored for the development of infections.

i have a 15 year old chihuahua that had lived with my dad since i left for college & moved out. unfortunately my father fell extremely ill & could not care for our tia any longer, but little did i know her condition. she had developed yeast on her skin & she, a primarily white dog, was literally yellow the day i picked her up. it took 3 months for me to realize we needed more than just a fish oil supplement & bi-weekly baths in medicated shampoo. after a bit of research i found that apoquel may be our solution. so, to the vet we went & got the Rx for the smallest dosage (3.3, i believe). we are now a month & two weeks into treatment & tia is no longer yellow. her skin has cleared tremendously. we still do bi-weekly baths with medicated shampoo but i can tell that tia feels oodles better & i hope to discontinue her Rx after 3 months. the vet said it can be long term or short term treatment. however, i recommend apoquel for anyone who is struggling with dermatitis or yeast.

My poor baby boy suffers terribly from atopic dermatitis and would get bleeding rashes between his toes, constant scratching, and dry cracking nose. Two weeks after starting Apoquel, all his skin reactions have been alleviated. We still have challenges with internal allergies but it is so good to see him happier.

I’ve had my rescue for a year and a half and he had many health issues. I solved four out of the five health issues, but the allergy issue I could never find relief from. My poor dog chewed on his paws so much, that I was at the vet once a month-expensive. I tried everything “natural” under the sun. I finally decided on medication and relief was evident in 2-3 hours! These meds are amazing and my buddy finally has relief and can sleep through the night. No more biting or licking of the paws. Thankfully no side effects that I can see.
