Prime seating — Art, architecture, and woodworking inform the Emmy Sofa, with its fluid lines and solid wood details that mix modernism and tradition. Cozy corners welcome you like an old friend, while pillowy cushions with just the right firmness convince you to linger awhile.

Based in Brooklyn, Egg Collective was founded in 2011 by designers Stephanie Beamer, Crystal Ellis and Hillary Petrie. The trio adeptly meld their individual areas of expertise, including art, architecture, and woodworking, into sculptural, heirloom-quality modern furniture that evokes their own histories and memories. Beamer’s cousin Mary Elizabeth – named after her grandmother and fondly known as Emmy – inspired the Emmy Sofa (2019). Reflecting its namesake’s brightness and strength of character, the sofa is tailored but relaxed, with a curved frame that creates cozy corners in which to curl up. Baffled back cushions with a feather-silk fill add just the right amount of support. “The Emmy speaks to multiple generations,” says Beamer. “Youthful yet mature, it resonates with a sense of modernism and tradition. It’s a place to feel at home.” Made in Canada.

A design is the concept of or proposal for an object, process, or system. The word design refers to something that is or has been intentionally created by a thinking agent, and is sometimes used to refer to the inherent nature of something – its design. The verb to design expresses the process of developing a design. In some cases, the direct construction of an object without an explicit prior plan may also be considered to be a design (such as in arts and crafts). A design is expected to have a purpose within a certain context, usually having to satisfy certain goals and constraints and to take into account aesthetic, functional, economic, environmental, or socio-political considerations. Traditional examples of designs include architectural and engineering drawings, circuit diagrams, sewing patterns, and less tangible artefacts such as business process models.

We love the design of this sofa because the curved back makes it a sofa with no back — it’s beautiful from every angle. The pebble weave fabric is also an elegant upholstery that’s pretty versatile. However our one disappointment is the sofa cushion; the stuffing does not uphold structure and we are seeing indentations after a week. I would order an extra cushion.

The design of this sofa is lovely. It’s very comfortable and looks wonderful in our space, but the upholstery leaves something to be desired. The Maharam Mode fabric itself is beautiful – super casual but still very elegant. On the seat cushion, however, it’s very loose. I have to flatten and smooth it out constantly or it looks a bit like an unmade bed. I wouldn’t necessarily call this a dealbreaker because we really love the sofa otherwise, but if you’re someone who doesn’t like to do a lot of “straightening” you may want to select another fabric.

The Emmy sofa has a design that reads classic and timeless: could be a pristine mid-century heirloom or brand-new. We had a hard time deciding between Pebble Weave Cinder – a perfect warm, dark grey – and Buff, a warm white. We went with Buff – though I will share that I poured red wine on the Buff sample before ordering, knowing THAT red wine was an inevitability in the decade to come. It didn’t soak in and actually cleaned up great. We’ve been living with this sofa for a few weeks now and it is exceeding expectations. It is gorgeous and comfortable. What you can’t capture in photos: at night, the Pebble Weave Buff fabric has a beautiful glow in lamp light. Highly recommend.
